Many people rely on the practice of face washing to help cleanse and balance the skin. Other people hardly ever wash their face- maybe only in the shower. But cleansing the skin is important for eliminating toxins that land on our face during the day and need to be washed away so they don’t settle into our skin.

We are exposed to toxins in the air throughout the day from air pollution, chemicals, and other exposures. The skin is the largest organ of the body and deserves recognition and care when we focus on the health of the body. Regular skin cleansing is important for maintaining healthy and glowing skin from the outside in.

Removing Dirt and Toxins

The main benefit to cleansing the skin is to remove dirt, oil and other pollutants and chemicals from the skin. Throughout the day the skin is exposed to a variety of irritants and contaminants including bacteria, viruses, and chemicals.

The body also produces new skin cells and has dead skin cells to slough away. Washing the face every day helps to remove impurities and gives the skin a fresh glow. When skin is unwashed it is not recommended to apply any products because they can push dirt deeper into the pores or may not properly penetrate the skin.

How to Choose a Cleanser

Choose a cleanser that is made and formulated for your skin type. Some cleansers are better for dry skin while others are made for skin that is oily or combination.

People with oily skin can use a lower pH level cleanser. If you have sensitive skin then choose a formula that is free of any fragrances or additives. Some cleansers are cream based while others are gel or foamy.

Choose the creamy cleanser if you tend towards dry skin. If you are an active person who exercises and sweats you can choose a cleanser made to unclog pores and reduce oily buildup.

Add a Moisturizer

Adding a moisturizer to your skincare routine helps the skin to maintain an elevated level of hydration which keeps it looking smooth and supple. When skin is dehydrated it can become weathered and rough, wrinkled, or can become discolored.
